Battery Recycling

Batteries collected from instruments and equipment purchased by MSU must be collected and sorted for recycling rather than disposed as trash. The types of batteries currently recycled at MSU include:

1. Rechargeable batteries

  • Nickel-cadmium Ni-cd)
  • Nickel metal hydride

2. Non-rechargeable batteries

  • Sealed Lead Acid (Pb)
  • Dry Lithium Ion (Li)
  • Dry Alkaline

Batteries should be sorted and collected in their appropriate box. Full boxes should be closed, sealed with tape, and shipped via UPS using the pre-paid and printed label on the box. Contact Regulatory Compliance (325-3294) for replacement boxes.

Boxes are currently held at Property Control and Receiving for the collection of batteries removed from instruments and equipment slated for disposal. Employees from Regulatory Compliance may occasionally contribute batteries collected from various laboratories or shops to these boxes.

Departments generating significant quantities of batteries may purchase their own boxes for the collection and recycling of batteries. Contact ORC for details (325-3294).
